SHIBORI: DYE & DISCHARGE

Explore the visual and textural cornucopia known as Shibori. Basic shaped resist techniques: tying, binding, pleating, stitching, knotting, clamping, and pole wrapping are easy to learn and offer a limitless interaction of pattern and color. We’ll use the Procion MX fiber reactive dyes, and thiox as the discharge agent, to dye cellulose fibers (cotton, rayon, Tencel, linen, and silk). We will cover cloth selection, preparation, and historical and contemporary applications, all through lively and humorous discussions. People have been doing this for thousands of years, you can too.

Material Fee: $20

TOTALLY TUBULAR TRIANGLES

Learn this fun new strip-piecing technique and get over your fear of the bias. Sew fabric strips into tubes. Cut these tubes into more strips and Rita will guide you through her Totally Tubular process for sewing them back together to easily create yards and yards of triangles of any size and angle you wish to make, without the use of paper or templates. Students create pieces of “fabric” that can be turned into a border, block, small quilt, several blocks or put into a garment.
