2. Playful Fabric Printing: A Printed Round Robin

Motif making and printing unique multicolor fabrics has never been easier, especially when using the techniques presented in Playful Fabric Printing, The Complete Guide to Printing Vibrant Beautiful Cloth using Low Tech Tools. We will use thickened Procion MX dye to print cotton fabrics in a free-form manner, explore printing in repeat, and we will use stamps, stencils and Thermofax screens in new and ingenious ways. Each student will carve a single motif from carving rubber, place that motif into a square repeat, learn to color separate the design and create a new layer. A supply of coordinated stamps, stencils and Thermofax screens will be available for in-class use, as well.

4. True Colors: Developing Your Personal Palette

For the dyer, the many choices of dye colors available can lead to confusion and disappointment in color outcomes.  This class will help you choose your personal palette of pure reds, yellow, and blues, from which all hues can be mixed. Emphasis is placed on mixing colors by eye rather than by formula, developing skill in intuitive color mixing, based primarily on training the eye and understanding of the relationship between colors.

The class will focus on
•  how to dye saturated, brilliant colors, and avoid mud
•  how to create interesting complex neutrals (Bring on the mud puddles!)
• how to shade from value to value and hue to hue

We will develop concepts through lecture and discussion and explore the possibilities of layering color to enrich the palette. Students will dye up from 8 to 10 yards of cotton using low water immersion techniques, resulting in both solid-colored and multi-colored cloth.  This class is appropriate for all levels.
