Artists in the Finger Lakes: A Plein air adventure into New York's stunning region of lakes, farms, and vineyards

Join artist Mary Padgett for a Finger Lakes fall adventure that will be more than just a plein air painting experience. Over this four-day program we’ll travel to diverse plein air sites from Skaneateles to Canandaigua as fall is dressing up the landscape with color. Each day, between and after painting sessions, we’ll meet farmers and vintners, taste their products, and learn about the region’s culture and history.

There is no better way to visit a place than as a plein air artist, lingering in spots to observe and record the surroundings. This experience is far richer than that of a tourist passing through. This will be an opportunity to practice the plein air painting process, receive individualized instruction, and to grow as an artist in a supportive and inspiring environment. We’ll paint on the shores and overlooks at several of the eleven “finger-shaped” lakes that make up the Finger Lakes region. Like a handprint on the landscape, these sparkling lakes are surrounded by rolling hillsides where we’ll visit some of the farmers and artisans who create the region’s award-winning bounty.
Program cost includes painting instruction, entry fees, tastings, boat tour and Saturday dinner. Optional farm-to-table dinners will be arranged. Optional boxed lunches can be arranged. All media and all levels are invited.
Our itinerary (detailed final itinerary will be available August 1):
Thursday Sept 12: Canandaigua’s City Pier and Kershaw Park; painting and tour at Sonnenberg Gardens.
Friday Sept 13: Vistas of Seneca Lake from Geneva; painting at one of the Finger Lake’s award winning wineries; wine and chocolate tasting.
Saturday Sept 14:Waterloo’s Montezuma Wildlife Refuge; dairy farm and cheese tasting. Evening boat tour with dinner on Skaneateles Lake.
Sunday Sept 15: Auburn and Owasco Lake; visit to the Schweinfurth Art Center’s exhibitions with a wrap-up discussion and critique.

Dazzling Beaded Jewelry

This class will give students the opportunity to explore many stitches and techniques which can expanded into completed projects long after the class is finished. Using seed and cylinder beads, Nancy will demonstrate samples of even and odd count peyote, ladder, brick, herringbone, St. Petersburg and Cellini stitches; spiral and flat spiral ropes, fringe/ tassel, how to add a clasp (commercial, beaded toggle and loop), and how to read a chart.
Some of these samples will be turned into a small project such as a beaded bead, a pair of earrings, beginnings of a bracelet or necklace if you wish to expand on a technique. In class students will make a flat spiral bracelet with directions from start to finish. In addition we will be trying our hand at free form beading and bead embroidery incorporating a cabochon or fancy button. After all is said and done, you will be able to continue on with whatever techniques interest you the most to create your own pieces. All work is sewn by hand and will not be done on a loom.

On Your Mark -- Print!

Take a favorite mark and use that motif in various print methods from direct dying and dye painting to layering print techniques wet and dry. We’ll create variety of fabrics that relate, contrast, and become the center of attention in a piece. Starting with a notebook of linear designs and shapes, we’ll center on how to use a mark and define that motif simply and dramatically. Experiment with underlaying color for a background, applying a printed texture to the fabric, and adding a graphic element through the use of silkscreen, monoprint, and stencils. Using thickened dye as our medium, we’ll add color and pattern, repetition and scale to design a fabric that will result in cloth that has layers of images, bold, beautiful, and one-of-a-kind. This class will leave you with a notebook of real experiences that use the surface design printing tools, and you’ll know well how to Make Your Mark!
