Opening Reception for Harriet: A Taste of Freedom

5 to 7 pm Friday, July 17
@ Cayuga Museum of History & Art

Harriet: A Taste of Freedom is a powerful exhibition that highlights the life and legacy of Harriet Tubman. Featuring work by more than 30 artists in a variety of media, the exhibition presents artistic interpretations of key moments from Tubman’s life, offering a range of perspectives on her enduring impact. Artwork will be featured in two galleries at the Cayuga Museum of History and Art and extend beyond to include the Schweinfurth Art Center, Equal Rights Heritage Center, Seward House Museum, and Willard Memorial Chapel, creating a citywide experience that connects art, history, and place.


The reception is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be available.

Harriet: A Taste of Freedom Curator's Tour

10 am to 4 pm Saturday, July 18

Join Curator Larry Poncho Brown for a citywide traveling tour of the newly opened art exhibition Harriet: A Taste of Freedom. Explore the cultural sites of Auburn, NY, and see the individual work of over 40 artists who have contributed to this exhibtion celebrating the life and experiences of one of Auburn’s most recognized citizens: Harriet Tubman.


Participants are welcome to join us on a shuttle tour that will take you to each site, with plenty of opportunities to engage directly with the curator and some of the featured artists. Lunch and parking passes for the downtown parking garage are included.

Artist's Talk: Alex Jacobs-Blum

12-1 pm Tuesday, Aug. 11

Gayogo̱hó:nǫˀ/Cayuga Wolf Clan artist Alex Jacobs-Blum will give an Artist's Talk about her three pieces in the exhibition "Sa:gwáyoˀ Gayogo̱hó:nǫˀ / Cayuga People, We Returned." Her video "Infinite Frequencies" documents her travels through Gayogo̱hó:nǫˀ homelands. "White Roots" envisions the roots of a white pine tree overlayed with a transparent image of the Dish with One Spoon wampum. "Bridge Between Two Worlds" tells the Hodinǫhsǫ́:nih/Haudenosaunee origin story.


The event is free and open to the public.

Artist's Talk: Eric Gansworth

2-3 pm Saturday, Aug. 15

Onoñda’gegá’/Onǫdagehó:nǫˀ/Onondaga Eel Clan artist Eric Gansworth will give an Artist's Talk about "Trinity," his piece in the exhibition "Sa:gwáyoˀ Gayogo̱hó:nǫˀ / Cayuga People, We Returned." Through cultural and political symbols, the artwork address attempts made to challenge and divide the Hodinǫhsǫ́:nih/Haudenosaunee people.

Opening Reception for Perpetual Expanse

4 to 6 pm Saturday, Aug. 29

Susan Ferarri Rowley, a contemporary sculptor based out of Scottsville, NY, has a solo exhibtion of her fabric and aluminum sculptures that seem to defy gravity as they partially hang on the wall. She played a major role in the acceptance of fabric as a sculptural medium by consistently putting her work into competitions that caused critics and judges to question existing standards for what is a proper medium for sculpture.


The reception is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be available.

Artist's Talk: Susan Ferrari Rowley

5 pm Saturday, Aug. 29

Susan Ferrari Rowley, of Scottsville, NY, will talk about her process of making sculptures out of fabric and aluminum. Her work is featured in a solo exhibition, Perpectual Expanse, at the Schweinfurth Art Center through Oct. 17, 2026. She creates work that is influenced by the architecture of the space where it will be displayed, and is creating a work specifically for display at the Schweinfurth.


The talk, which occurs during the opening reception for the exhibition, is free and open to the public.
